I am a community-based specialty provider. How do I know whether I need to enter infusion orders for my patient via Epic or if I need to access infusion orders via Children’s website?
If you have full access to Children’s Health℠ version of Epic you will need to enter infusion orders via Epic.
If you have access to Epic via EpiCareLink, you will need to visit Children’s website for the list of approved therapy plans and the referral process.
I need help understanding the Special Procedure Unit (SPU) ordering process. Who should I contact?
For general questions about scheduling, please contact the Plano Special Procedure Unit (SPU) clinic at 469-303-3400
What should I tell my patients to expect once the therapy plan order has been placed?
Once a referral to Special Procedure Unit (SPU) has been made, families are generally contacted within 2-3 business days to set up the infusion appointment. In general, appointments are scheduled 2-3 weeks out.
I would like to talk to one of the nurses in the Special Procedure Unit (SPU) about an upcoming patient appointment. How do I contact them?
If you have a specific patient concern, please contact the Special Procedure Unit (SPU) at 469-303-3400
For our anxious patients, we do have child life staff available in clinic to assist with support for patients during IV starts.
Once a referral is placed, how long does the prior authorization process usually take?
The prior authorization process generally takes 2-3 weeks.
What is the address and phone number of the Special Procedure Unit (SPU)?
Children’s Health Specialty Center 1 Plano, 7601 Preston Road, Suite P2300, Plano, Texas 75024. 469-303-3400
The type of infusion order that I have placed in the past is different than what is available on the list of infusion orders. What are my next steps?
Please contact our Special Procedure Unit (SPU) support team at 469-303-3400.
The Special Procedure Unit (SPU) will draw my patient’s labs. How will I get those results?
The SPU nursing team is not responsible for managing or notifying referring providers of lab results unless they are a condition of treatment within the infusion orders.
My patient is starting a new drug. Who will handle patient education?
It is our expectation that the referring provider office will provide any necessary education and follow up for patients receiving special procedure infusions.
