Epilepsy clinic update - In the know - january
Depression and mood disorders
Depression and mood disorders are common in people with epilepsy. The Children's Health℠ Epilepsy Center routinely screens patients for depression. Children ages 12 and older, who are able to complete a basic questionnaire, are screened for depression at every clinic visit.
Teens are given a set of 13 questions that they complete independently. The questions screen for changes in their mood and self-perception. They also ask about changes or issues regarding sleep, appetite/eating habits, energy levels, concentration and how they feel when doing things they usually enjoy. Lastly, the questionnaire asks if teens have had any thoughts about hurting themselves. These answers provide key information that allow us to identify mood problems and provide resources for treatment if there is concern of depression.
Since most of our patients are only seen every six months or less, symptoms may begin between visits. For this reason, we ask teens to complete the questionnaire at every visit. We ask parents to give teens the space to complete the questionnaire privately and independently. Some might not even realize they are experiencing symptoms of depression. Allowing them the time and space to answer questions honestly can result in identifying depression sooner and offering support or resources.
If you have questions about the screening, we encourage you to ask. If you have concerns that your child may be depressed, please let your child’s provider know. We appreciate your participation and the opportunity to partner with you and your child!
