Voices of PRIDE: Adolfo Flores, M.D.

My journey into medicine was bittersweet. I remember wanting to be a physician from a very young age ever since my father, also part of the medical field, brought home slides of biological specimens to review under the microscope. It sparked a curiosity in me to learn more about how the human body works. But it wasn't just about the science. It was about knowing that I was gay, growing up in a time when our community was still dealing with the AIDS epidemic and wanting to make a difference for those like me in the LGBTQ+ community.
Medical school wasn't all textbooks and lectures. It was about finding my place in a world where being LGBTQ+ wasn't always accepted with open arms. I remember diving into HIV research thinking that this would be how I could help my community, but little did I know that my career would take a very different path. Early on in medical school I met my husband, now a Children’s Health℠ trained pediatric psychologist. Together, we embarked in the wonderful world of pediatrics. He became my rock, my confidant and we faced every challenge head-on – determined not just to survive, but to thrive.
Fast forward to my residency at Children's Medical Center Dallas, and I found a home – a place where I could be myself without reservation. Sure, there were moments of doubt and discomfort, but it was also where I found unwavering support and acceptance from mentors and peers. Now, ten years into my career, I wanted to create a safe space for LGBTQ+ youth to feel safe and feel free to be who they are. Luckily, Children’s Health gave me the opportunity to do this by opening up an LGBTQ+ primary care clinic dedicated to the youth and young adults in our community – for those that identify as LGBTQ+ themselves or those that come from LGBTQ+ families. I get to spend every day empowering my patients with the knowledge that I wish I was given by my pediatrician when I was young:
There is nothing wrong with who you are.
Love yourself.
You will find those who appreciate you for who you are and you will thrive.
