Important information regarding construction around Dallas and Plano campuses

Remember to wear N95 Masks for cancer patients with weakened immune systems.

Dear Patient Families,

You may be aware that the old Parkland hospital building will soon be removed. That building is very close to our hospital, and we anticipate that there will be significant dust associated with that work. In addition, construction is ongoing on the Plano campus.

Whenever there is construction/renovation in or around the hospital, we take great care to contain dust that may be created from work within the construction/renovation zone. We have a team of doctors, nurses and construction experts who carefully monitor the status of ongoing construction/renovation projects.

We take these steps because dusty air can carry germs that sometimes cause infections in cancer patients who have weakened immune systems. We have observed these types of infections in the past around construction and ask for your help to reduce exposure of your child to infection risks:

  • Everyone currently wears a mask in the clinical areas due to COVID-19. To add more protection around construction, we will now ask your child to begin wearing an N-95 mask while entering and leaving the hospital/clinic. Your nurse will provide you with a few of these masks if needed when you are at the hospital.

  • When you come to the clinic, we advise that you place the N-95 mask on your child while still in the car, fasten with the white strap, and keep it in place until you enter the CCBD Clinic. Please remember that dust in the air can get into a car, even with the windows closed.

  • Please remember to wash your hands often.

  • Please make certain that you limit the number of toys and other items that you bring into the hospital, especially items that cannot be easily wiped off.

  • We recommend that you restrict your child from exposure to construction sites and renovation projects both within the home and outside when their blood counts are low.

Please feel free to ask your doctors and nurses any questions that you may have. Our primary goal is to provide the best care to your child in the safest environment and we thank you for your help with this

Sincerely, Pauline Allen Gill Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders Staff
